2024 Spring Bladder Cancer Summit for Patients and Families

The 2024 Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) Spring Bladder Cancer Summit for Patients and Families will help you cope with a bladder cancer diagnosis for you or a loved one. Taking place at the Marriott Seattle Airport Hotel in Seattle, WA on March 8th and 9th, the 2024 Spring Summit will give you and your family tools to manage the journey from diagnosis, through treatment, and on to surveillance and survivorship.

The summit is free to attend, but registration is required. The full agenda is below.

Friday, March 8, 2024

10:00 am – 11:00 am Welcome – from BCAN CEO Andrea Maddox-Smith. Learn about BCAN’s latest programs and services that can help you understand and manage your diagnosis from BCAN’s Director of Education and Advocacy, Stephanie Chisolm, PhD.

11:00 am – 11:30 am     Patient Research Advocates – Learn the history, value and impact of patient reported outcomes in guiding future bladder cancer journeys with urologist Dr. John Gore from the Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

11:30 am – 1:00 pm     Lunch and BCAN’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Mark Story, will share tips to amplify BCAN awareness messages for May, Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.

1:00 pm -2:30 pm     Explore how cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation can help you before and after treatment with Drs. Sarah Psutka , Hannah Hunter, and David Sheppard, PhD, from the Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

2:30 pm – 2:45 pm     Break                          

2:45 pm ­– 4:15 pm     A bladder cancer diagnosis can be life threatening, and life changing. Treatments, recovery, cancer monitoring, and surveillance schedules can create chaos and anxiety. Los Angeles psychiatrist Deane Wolcott, MD will join BCAN co-founder Diane Quale and Stephanie Chisolm to discuss common mental health concerns after bladder cancer and how mental health and supportive care services can help.

4:15 pm – 4:30  pm     Break 

4:30 pm – 6:00 pm     Nurse practitioner Krisztina Emodi, FNP, MPH, CNS, wears many hats, including co-chair of BCAN’s Survivorship Taskforce. Help Krisztina fine tune key issues related to bladder cancer survivorship to enable BCAN to create innovative  programs and resources to help everyone navigate the potholes that often accompany the journey to long term survivorship in bladder cancer.

6:00 pm – 8:30 pm Happy Hour and Dinner

8:00 am- 9:00  am   Breakfast and BCAN Volunteer and Information Fair

9:00 am – 10:00 am     Long-time bladder cancer survivors share their tips and tricks for navigating the road to survivorship with bladder cancer. BCAN patient advocates share a few suggestions with you. Moderated by nurse practitioner Krisztina Emodi and Stephanie Chisolm.

10:00 am – 10:30 am     Break

10:30 am  – Noon     Taste fabulous food and learn to nourish your body with patient advocate, chef, and Founder of Cook for Your Life, Ann Ogden-Gaffney  and registered dietitian Gretchen Gruender, MS RDN CSO from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

12:00 pm 1:00 pm Lunch

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm     Hear about exciting new treatments and promising research to diagnose and treat bladder cancer with University of San Francisco Health urologist Carissa Chu, MD, and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center medical oncologist Petros Grivas, MD, PhD, as they discuss recent and upcoming bladder cancer research advances with BCAN co-founder Diane Zipursky Quale.
