Statement on American Cancer Society’s Estimated Bladder Cancer Cases in 2023

Today, the American Cancer Society (ACS) released their Cancer Facts and Figures annual report, an estimate of the number of people who will get different types of cancer in the coming year. In 2023, the ACS estimates that 82,290 people will be diagnosed with bladder cancer, and 16,710 patients will not survive their disease.

“We are making progress in the fight against bladder cancer, but until the estimated cases are zero, there is so much work to be done in research, advocacy and patient support,” said Andrea Maddox-Smith, CEO of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN).

Within the statistics for bladder cancer, there are some troubling underlying figures. The number of people expected to be diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2023 rose by 1.35% over the prior year, and predicted diagnoses increased in both men and women. Bladder cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in America (7^th) and is the fourth-most common cancer in men. 

To help patients and their loved ones cope with their disease, on its web site, BCAN offers a state-by-state listing of 2023 bladder cancer statistics as well as National Cancer Institute, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and Veterans Administration treatment facilities as well as available clinical trials in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

“It is troubling to see that expected bladder cancer cases are increasing. Every single case of bladder cancer listed in ACS’s 2023 report represents someone’s loved one,” said Maddox-Smith. “BCAN will remain steadfast in our support of bladder cancer patients, their loved ones as well as continue to fund medical research to end bladder cancer.”
