Contacting Your Elected Officials

Your Voice Matters

Advocacy is the process of supporting a cause, idea, or proposal. At its core, advocacy ensures that everyone has the opportunity to:

  • Be heard on issues that matter to them
  • Protect and promote their rights
  • Have their views and wishes genuinely considered in decisions affecting their lives

At BCAN, advocacy means working to influence the creation, enactment, or improvement of policies and laws that impact the bladder cancer community. This can happen at the federal, state, or local level.  This page provides tips on how to contact your elected officials and have your voice heard.

Contacting Your Elected Officials

Federal and state legislators care deeply about what their constituents have to say—especially when they hear from them directly. By sharing your story and advocating for bladder cancer awareness and research, you help bring our mission to find a cure directly to those with the power to act.

You can contact your elected officials:

  • In person – at their offices in Washington, D.C., or in your local district
  • By phone, email, or traditional mail

Whether you’re advocating for better healthcare coverage, access to clinical trials, or increased research funding, your outreach can make a real difference.

How to Find Your Federal Representatives

Each American is represented by two U.S. Senators and one Member of the House of Representatives.

To find your U.S. Senators:

To find your Member of Congress:

You can also call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. A staff member can help connect you to your legislators—just have your zip code or address ready.

Locating Local Offices

Most legislators maintain offices both in Washington, D.C. and in their home districts.

U.S. Senate websites can be found at www.senate.gov or typically follow the format: [email protected]

House Members’ sites are listed at www.house.gov, usually in the format: [email protected]

Once on their website, look for a “Contact” or “Office Locations” section. This will list phone numbers and addresses for each of their offices.
