Understanding the Burden and Impact of Financial Toxicity in Bladder Cancer: A Mixed Methods Study of Two Diverse Patient Populations

Summary:

Background 

Bladder cancer is the most expensive cancer to treat in the United States. These costs include direct out-of-pocket expenses like doctor bills and medications, as well as indirect costs such as lost income from being unable to work. Research in other cancers shows that up to half of patients experience serious financial strain, which often lowers their quality of life. Some patients even delay or skip parts of their treatment because of money problems. This heavy financial stress is called “financial toxicity” because it harms patients much like a side effect of treatment. 

What This Research Proposes to Address 

This project will study how financial toxicity affects people with bladder cancer. Researchers will look at patients from many different backgrounds, including those of different races, ethnicities, insurance types, and income levels. They will measure how much financial strain patients face, how it affects their quality of life, and whether it leads them to delay or avoid treatment. They will also study what doctors know and think about these financial issues. 

Why This Research Is Important 

Understanding financial toxicity in bladder cancer is crucial. Patients under financial stress may have worse health outcomes and higher risk of death. This study will identify which patients are most at risk, how finances affect their quality of life, and what role doctors can play in helping. With this knowledge, future programs can be designed to ease financial burdens and ensure patients get the care they need.
