Emotional and Mental Health and Bladder Cancer

A bladder cancer diagnosis can bring strong emotional feelings like anxiety, sadness, or anger.  While these emotions are completely normal, it is important to find healthy ways to cope with them.  You don’t have to manage these feelings alone.

What is psychological health?

When it comes to emotional well being, you may hear the words mental health and psychological health.  Although there are small differences, both words refer to how well you manage your emotions, and the ups and downs life brings.

Psychological health is about how we think, feel, and relate to others. It includes our ability to cope with things in our lives that cause emotional stress.

Where can you find support?

Taking care of your emotional well being is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Seeking the right support can significantly improve your quality of life and help you navigate the difficult aspects of living with a bladder cancer diagnosis. Support can come from family, friends, peers, and health professionals when needed.  The following BCAN resources are available to help patients and caregivers:

  • Peer-to-Peer.  Talking with others who are going through similar experiences can be helpful. BCAN’s Survivor 2 Survivor (S2S) program matches bladder cancer patients and caregivers with trained volunteers who have gone through similar experiences.
  •  Support groups. Browse our list of virtual, in-person, and hybrid bladder cancer support groups available across the U.S.
  • BCAN Support line.   Our toll-free support line is staffed by bilingual (English & Spanish) oncology social workers who can provide emotional support and connect you to resources in your community.
  • Webinars. Scan our library of recorded webinars on topics such as mental health, exercise, treatment, and more.
  • Online Community.  The Inspire Support Community is a virtual forum where patients and caregivers from around the world share stories.

These resources are here to help you manage the emotional impact of bladder cancer and foster resilience throughout your survivorship experience.
