Emeritus Member | Bernard Bochner, MD

Dr. Bochner is a Member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on the Urology Service and a Professor in the Department of Urology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.   Currently, Dr. Bochner is the inaugural holder of the Sir Murray Brennan Endowed Chair in Surgery at MSKCC. He served as a Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery and is the immediate past co-Director of the Pelvic and Reconstructive Surgery group at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Bochner’s clinical focus is on urologic oncology with a particular interest in bladder cancer and pelvic reconstructive surgery.    He has extensive experience with radical cystectomy (bladder removal), pelvic lymphadenectomy (lymph node dissection) as well as all the various urinary tract reconstructive options.   He is actively involved in translational research focused on improving cancer diagnosis, patient treatment options, and enhancing recovery after urologic surgery.   His work is published in many high impact journals and has over 275 publications to his credit.  Dr. Bochner is currently a co-PI of project 4 as part of the MSKCC Bladder Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant investigating the role of immunotherapy in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.   Dr. Bochner also leads the bladder cancer Disease Management Group at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center which is comprised of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and nursing specialists.   Nationally Dr. Bochner has participated as a member of the TCGA project in bladder cancer, the urothelial cancer working group of the Genitourinary Task Force of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) for the last two staging revisions, and was a member of the American Urological Association/SUO/ASCO/ASTRO Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer guideline panel.  He is an elected fellow in the American Surgical Association, the Society of Pelvic Surgeons (secretary elect), a member of the Society of University Surgeons, American Urologic Association, and Society of Urologic Oncology.

Dr. Bochner completed his general and urologic surgery training at the Department of Urology at the University of Southern California.  He subsequently completed a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center as an American Foundation for Urologic Disease fellow and recipient of a Clinical Oncology Career Development award from the American Cancer Society.  After completion of his training, Dr. Bochner joined the faculty at USC before joining the MSKCC faculty in 2000.
