Douglas Cappiello, MD

Director

Dr. Douglas A. Cappiello is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist who practiced at Kaiser Permanente in both Northern California and in the Mid Atlantic region for nearly 30 years.  During his career at Kaiser Permanente, he also held numerous leadership roles.

In the Mid Atlantic region, Dr Cappiello served as the Associate Medical Director for Operational Excellence, from 2016 until his retirement in March 2018.  In this role he was responsible for assuring optimal operational performance across the Mid Atlantic region. Prior to this, he served as Physician-in-Chief for the Northern Virginia Service Area, and was a member of the medical group’s Board of Directors from 2009 through 2016.

Before transferring to Kaiser Permanente’s Mid Atlantic region, Dr. Cappiello practiced Ophthalmology at The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) in Northern California for 19 years, and was Chief of Ophthalmology. TPMG is one of the nation’s largest multi-specialty medical group practices, with over 10,000 physicians from virtually every specialty. During much of that time he served as a Director on the TPMG Board of Directors for 12 years, holding the position of Board Treasurer and Chair of both The Finance and Audit Committee, and the Compensation Committee.

Doug is a bladder cancer survivor, first diagnosed in April 2020 with high grade, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. After failing a course of BCG, he underwent radical cystectomy in January 2021 and has been disease free since then. He is a staunch believer in the mission of BCAN, and has proudly served as a Survivor-to-Survivor volunteer since 2021, and also a patient advocate and research advocate for BCAN.

Doug and his wife Camille have two grown daughters and two grandchildren that take up much of their time. His hobbies include hiking, scuba diving, oil painting and travel.
