Matthew Nielsen, MD

Dr. Matthew Nielsen received his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at the Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is currently Associate Professor and Director of Urologic Oncology in the Department of Urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also serves as co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Program at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Health Policy & Management at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Nielsen has a major interest not only in the direct care of bladder cancerpatients but also in clinical and translational research towards the goal of improving quality and patient-centered care. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the American Cancer Society, and nationally recognized by the Rising Stars in Urology Research Award. In addition, he serves in leadership roles in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement activities locally and on the national level.
