Norm D. Smith, MD

Norm D. Smith, M.D. hails from the small gold-mining town of Lead, South Dakota. He received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Notre Dame and then attended Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Under the mentorship of Dr. John T. Grayhack, he stayed at Northwestern for Urology residency training, followed by an Oncology research fellowship. Dr. Smith initially joined the faculty at Northwestern and developed major leadership roles as Chief of Urologic Oncology at Northwestern and Section Head of Northwestern Urology at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. The culmination of these leadership efforts was selection for the prestigious AUA Leadership Program class of 2010-2011. He presently serves on the AUA Legislative Affairs committee and as AUA RUC Advisor. Dr. Smith joined faculty at the University of Chicago in 2010 as Associate Professor and Co-Director of Urologic Oncology with continued specialty interest in Urologic Oncology, particularly clinical and research interests in bladder and prostate cancer. He is presently a co-investigator for both the “Robotic versus Open Radical Cystectomy: A Randomized Trial” and the “Phase III Surgical Trial to Evaluate the Benefit of a Standard Versus an Extended Pelvic Lymphadenectomy Performed at Time of RadicalCystectomy for Muscle Invasive Urothelial Cancer”. Dr. Smith has been active in the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, serving on the BCAN grant review committee as well as the scientific advisory board. Dr. Smith has over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts including publications in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Clinical Cancer Research and the Journal of Urology.
